My recommendation for most first-time visitors: Book the city center or Promenade du Soleil. You can reach Menton’s main sights on foot and take the train for day trips without needing a car.
My personal choice for a slower return trip: Garavan. We loved the quieter waterfront atmosphere and found it easy to travel between France and Italy from Menton-Garavan station.

Because everything is squeezed between the mountains and the sea, the town naturally stretches east to west—so all the places you’ll want to explore (Old Town, the Promenade, the beaches, the markets, the train stations) sit along one beautiful line.
And I’ll be honest: the very first time I came here, I thought, Is this really all there is?
Ten minutes later, I got it. Menton unfolds slowly. The more you wander, the more it reveals. The pastel Old Town, the curve of Sablettes Beach, the scent of lemon trees, the light shifting on the water—it all builds, moment by moment, into the kind of place you end up returning to again and again.

For a first trip to Menton, this is the easiest area to recommend. The city center puts you close to the main train station, Jardin Biovès, shops, bakeries and restaurants. The Promenade du Soleil runs beside the Mediterranean and gives you straightforward access to the beach.
This area is particularly useful if you arrive by train or plan day trips to Monaco, Nice, or Ventimiglia. It is also the most practical base for the Fête du Citron because its major venues are concentrated around Jardin Biovès and the promenade.

Hôtel de Londres is the hotel I would recommend to the widest range of first-time visitors. It is in the center of Menton, about 50 meters from the beach, and its location makes it easy to walk to the train station, promenade, and town center. The listed historic façade and garden give it more character than a standard chain hotel.

L’ÉCLAT Méditerranéen is a one-bedroom apartment in Menton’s pedestrian center. Its proper kitchen and small balcony make it more practical than a hotel room if you want to prepare breakfast, stay several nights or settle into the town instead of eating every meal out.
This is where we stayed on our first visit to Menton. I loved the access to everything and how walkable it was, especially when we had to leave the apartment for a walking tour of Menton. The meeting point was literally right around the corner!

Appartamento Elegante in Villa Storica sul Mare: Our Personal Favorite

We stayed at Appartamento Elegante in Villa Storica sul Mare and loved it. The apartment is inside a historic seaside villa with tall ceilings, old-world details, and windows facing the Mediterranean. It felt peaceful and genuinely connected to the neighborhood rather than designed as a generic vacation rental.
The property is dog-friendly, which mattered to us, and the owners created a digital guide for guests. They speak French and Italian, but communication was never an issue during our stay.

If you have heavy luggage or limited mobility, stay near the lower edge of Old Town instead of choosing a rental high on the hill.

You can walk to the Old Town and beach without having to carry your luggage up narrow staircases. For the Menton Lemon Festival, prioritize location over a sea-view upgrade. Major events center on Jardin Biovès and the Promenade du Soleil, and the official festival recommends public transportation because so many visitors arrive in town.
My first choice would be Hôtel Vacances Bleues Balmoral for its position near the waterfront and festival route. Hôtel de Londres is another strong choice because it balances access to Menton station, the beach and Jardin Biovès. Best Western Hôtel Méditerranée works well if you want festival access plus restaurants and Old Town sightseeing. This is if you want to be close.
Otherwise, Garavan is perfect, and the apartment we stayed at was wonderful.
Hotels can fill up early for major parade weekends. If your dates are firm, book a refundable rate rather than waiting to finalize every detail of your itinerary.

Find a Menton Hotel for the Lemon FestivalShould You Stay in Menton or Nice?
Unpopular opinion: Stay in Menton for your time in the French Riviera; sure, it’s smaller and quieter, but that’s the point! You can take the train to any small town on the Riviera within minutes!
Stay in Nice if you want a larger city, nightlife, a broader selection of restaurants, or the widest transportation connections across the French Riviera. Menton remains possible as a day trip, but you will spend part of your day traveling and may encounter busy trains during the festival.
Do You Need a Car in Menton?
No. Menton is well suited to a car-free trip. Regional trains connect it with Nice, Monaco and Ventimiglia, and the central sights are walkable.
A car can help you reach smaller inland villages, but parking and narrow streets make it more work in town. If you bring a car, confirm that your accommodation includes parking or find a nearby garage before you arrive.
Never assume “parking available” means free private parking at the property.
