DESTINATIONS / EUROPE
POLAND
I came to Poland expecting a quick stop and ended up going back again and again.
Most people start in Kraków — and you should — but the Poland I think about is the quieter stuff: a painted village few people have heard of, a Soviet-era district on the edge of the city, Christmas markets the guidebooks skip.
A few honest notes: English gets patchy outside the cities, the history runs heavy in places, and as a solo female traveler, I found it easier than I expected.

The practical stuff
May–June and September–October are the sweet spot — fewer crowds, and stays run 20–30% cheaper than peak summer.
Still one of Europe’s best values — roughly $35–50 a day backpacking, $70–100 mid-range.
A great train country. PKP Intercity links the cities; FlixBus and BlaBlaCar cover the rest. You don’t need a car.
