Trying to figure out where to stay for the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market, and whether you should base yourself in Freiburg or a small Black Forest town?

I stayed two nights in Titisee in November 2024, with only one full day to see both the Freiburg im Breisgau Christmas markets and the Ravenna Gorge. It worked, and I’d book the same base again. Here’s where I’d stay, where I wouldn’t, and exactly how I fit it all into one weekend without a car.

The quick answer: stay in Titisee if it’s your first visit, Hinterzarten if you want to be as close to the gorge as possible, and Freiburg only if you want a city break with the gorge as a side trip.

What’s the Best Town to Stay in the Black Forest for the Ravenna Gorge?

The best town to stay in the Black Forest for the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market depends on how you want to spend your evenings. All three of the best bases, Titisee, Hinterzarten, and Freiburg im Breisgau, sit on the same Höllentalbahn train line, so you can reach the gorge from any of them without a car. The real differences are distance, price, and how lively you want your nights to be.

Why I Stayed in Titisee Instead of Freiburg im Breisgau

Freiburg im Breisgau is the obvious choice when you start searching. It’s the biggest city near the Ravenna Gorge; it has more hotels, and its Christmas market is one of the best-known in the Black Forest.

I skipped it on purpose. I wanted a smaller town that felt like the Black Forest, and I wanted to be close to Hinterzarten, where the torch walk to the market starts.

From Titisee, Hinterzarten is a short train ride away, so getting to the gorge in the evening was easy. From Freiburg im Breisgau, you add a longer train ride each way, and the Freiburg im Breisgau Shuttle costs extra.

The trade-off is that Titisee is quiet at night, with fewer restaurants and nothing like Freiburg’s old town. For a weekend built around the Ravenna Gorge, that didn’t bother me at all.

Pension Bergseeblick Titisee Review: Where I Stayed

I booked Pension Bergseeblick for two nights and paid US$145 total in November 2024, so roughly $72 a night.

It’s a small guesthouse, and the owner was one of the best parts of the stay. Check-in was easy, and breakfast was genuinely delicious. My room was small, with one single bed, and it stayed warm, which matters in the Black Forest in late November.

Don’t expect anything fancy. This is a simple, comfortable place to sleep with a wonderful owner, and it’s about a 10-minute walk from the Titisee train station.

Best for: solo travelers and anyone on a budget who’d rather spend money at the markets than on a hotel room

Coucou Hotel Titisee: The Hotel at the Train Station

If you’ve seen influencers recommend a hotel at the Titisee train station, it’s probably [Coucou Hotel]. I didn’t stay here, but I understand why it’s so popular for car-free trips. The hotel is partly in the historic Titisee station building, and it has a small wellness area with a steam bath and sauna.

The main thing reviewers mention is noise. Most guests say train noise is minimal, but some note that rooms facing the station can hear announcements, so ask for a room on the quieter side.

Best for: anyone who wants to step off the train and walk straight into the lobby, and doesn’t mind paying more for it.

Gästehaus Sandvoss: Where My Friend Stayed

My friend Kristy booked Gästehaus Sandvoss and loved it. The owners were wonderful and accommodating, and she felt she got much more than she paid for.

Her only issue was getting into her apartment on arrival, so read the check-in instructions carefully before you arrive, especially if you’re getting there after dark.

Hinterzarten Hotels: Closest Stays to the Ravenna Gorge

Hinterzarten is the closest town to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market. The guided torch walk starts at the Kurhaus here, and the unguided route through the Löffeltal valley starts here too, so you can walk to the market and take the shuttle back to your room.

It’s smaller and quieter than Titisee, which is either exactly what you want or a little too sleepy, depending on your style.

Where to Stay in Freiburg for the Christmas Markets

Freiburg makes sense if the Ravenna Gorge is one evening of a longer trip. You get a much wider choice of hotels, more restaurants, and a Christmas market you can walk to every night.

The downside is travel time. Getting from Freiburg to the gorge and back takes a good chunk of your evening, and the shuttle from Freiburg costs extra, while the shuttles from Titisee, Hinterzarten, and Himmelreich are free with a matching ticket.

Best for: travelers who care more about the city than the forest, or anyone staying three or more nights.

My 2-Day Black Forest Christmas Market Weekend Itinerary

Here’s exactly how the weekend worked from a Titisee base, with one arrival night, one full day, and a morning departure.

Night 1: Basel to Titisee by Train

The route is simple. Take a train from Basel SBB or Basel Bad Bf to Freiburg Hauptbahnhof, then transfer to a regional train toward Titisee Bahnhof. The whole trip takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, and trains run hourly. Tickets were easy to buy, and it was a relaxing ride after a flight. There’s also a FlixBus from Basel SBB to Titisee, which takes about the same time, but it only runs a few times a week, so check it before you count on it. Driving is faster at about 1 hour 15 minutes, taking the A5 north into Germany and then the B31 east toward Freiburg and Titisee-Neustadt, but I wouldn’t rent a car just for this weekend.

Once we got to Titisee, we had dinner in town at Restaurant Pferdestall, checked into our rooms, and went to bed early, because the next day was the big one.

Day 2 Morning: Freiburg Christmas Market Food and Shopping

The next morning, we took the train from Titisee to Freiburg.

The Freiburg Christmas market isn’t one big square. It’s spread across the old town; the tourism board usually adds a map at the start of the Christmas Market season, so you end up walking from one market to the next. I loved that. It never felt like one crowded block, and wandering between them was half the fun.

And the food. The food in Freiburg was glorious. I drank copious amounts of mulled wine and ate roasted cinnamon almonds. If you only have one day, plan to graze your way through lunch here rather than sitting down at a restaurant. However, we knew we needed to at least grab a late lunch, so we went to Pho-1986

Day 2 Evening: Freiburg to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market

In the late afternoon, we headed back up the valley toward Hinterzarten for the part of the trip I’d been waiting for.

We did the torch walk from Hinterzarten, which made getting to the market part of the fun. Then we spent the evening eating, drinking Feuerzangenbowle, and watching the viaduct light up above the stalls.

Day 3: Leaving the Black Forest by Train

We left Titisee around 10 AM on November 23. Kristy headed back to Basel for her flight, and I took the train home to Vicenza instead.

If you live in Europe, this is worth knowing. The Black Forest is very reachable by train, so you don’t have to fly back out of Basel if another route works better for you.
