Where to stay in Cortina d’Ampezzo
For my solo weekend adventure in the Dolomites, I chose to stay at B&B Hotel Passo Tre Croci Cortina. This was about 45 minutes away from the start point of the snowshoeing experience.
I believe this hotel is perfect for solo travelers like me (or maybe you!)
Things I loved:
- Parking on site
- Close to a major hiking trail in the summer
- Nestled in between Cortina and Lago Di Misurina
- Easy to get to
- Great food
- Great Customer Service.

Snowshoeing in the Dolomites
Our snowshoeing route, Sentiero delle Trincee, wasn’t just beautiful—it was packed with fascinating World War I history.
Elisa shared captivating stories about soldiers and the battles fought right beneath our feet.
Snowshoeing through pristine snow with serene silence and panoramic mountain vistas was absolutely surreal. I’ll never forget the moment I paused, surrounded by untouched snow and towering peaks—it felt like stepping into a living postcard.
My favorite part about this whole experience was the fact that I was starting to understand where I was in the Dolomites and I had epic views of Tofana and the surrounding valleys.
Along the way, Elisa made it a point to make sure others were safe on their own journeys and when we stopped to admire the stunning Tofana ridgeline, she struck up a conversation with another group that said they wanted to try and rock climb through the towers of Cinque Torri.
She reminded them that right now would not be such a great idea because of the risk of ice and avalanches. Elisa made it a point to make sure I was okay as well as everyone enjoying the stunning area we were all exploring.
Elisa mentioned every year people have to get rescued off the mountains due to irresponsible behavior and it was hard for her to watch folks head up the mountainside without proper gear in the snow.
Must-Visit Stops: Cozy Rifugios with Stunning Views
We paused at Rifugio Scoiattoli, a perfect spots to rest and soak in the mesmerizing views of the surrounding peaks and of course for a bathroom break.
Many people were enjoying what she told me was the last good weekend for skiing and snowboarding. We were right at the lift where folks come up to Rifugio Sciattoli.
The unforgettable highlight was our lunch stop at Rifugio Averau. Imagine savoring delicious alpine cuisine and sipping on a rich, warming Bombardino (a must-try Italian winter drink!) while overlooking snow-covered mountains—pure winter magic!
Mount Averau is the highest peak in the Nuvolau Group, with incredible views overlooking Cinque Torri, Giau Pass, and Falzarego Pass.
According to local legends, it’s said to be the secret home of the Eagle with golden talons and a fiery beak—a key figure in the ancient tale of Dolasilla and the Kingdom of Fanes. I thought this was so incredibly cool to hear about a few of the legends of the Dolomites.
The whole trip took approximately 4.5 hours and It was a perfect way to get beautiful views of the Dolomites. It’s honestly a stunning activity to do in this area because if you don’t like skiing and snowboarding, snowshoeing in the Dolomites is a wonderful way to get acquainted with the area.
You can’t go wrong hiring a local guide either!
Practical Tips: What to Wear & Bring
- Dress in layers (thermal base layers, fleece mid-layers, waterproof jackets)
- Warm gloves, hat, and waterproof boots are essential
- Sunglasses and sunscreen (yes, even in winter!)
- Bring a camera or smartphone—cold-weather-friendly gear recommended
Difficulty Level
The snowshoeing trail around Cinque Torri is moderate, suitable for beginners with a reasonable fitness level. Guides adjust the pace to your group’s comfort, ensuring a fun and safe adventure.
Elisa mentioned that you can adjust the route according to need and you can ask for different routes. She will decide if its safe and suitable.
This trail was about 4 miles long round-trip.
