We were awestruck by the diverse landscape and how GREEN everything was. The temple was also my favorite because It was set in such a serene area. Birds were chirping and there was a sense of calm.

Why Hike in Songnisan National Park?
Songnisan, located in the central region of South Korea, is one of the country’s nine national parks. It spans an area of over 200 square kilometers, with towering granite peaks, dense forests, and clear streams. The park is also home to a range of wildlife, ancient temples, and historical sites. The park’s name, “Songni,” is derived from the word “song,” meaning pine tree, and “ni,” meaning valley, which reflects the park’s natural beauty.
Our drive from Pyeontaek was absolutely stunning, and it was a chance to see more of the Korean countryside. I absolytely loved seeing it during the green spring, the weather was perfect.
Why Hike Munjangdae Peak in Songnisan National Park?
Munjangdae stands at 1,028 meters (3,373 feet) and is one of the most famous peaks in Songnisan National Park. The name “Munjangdae” translates to “Terrace of Literary Excellence,” as legend has it that scholars once visited the peak for inspiration. Today, it continues to inspire with its dramatic rock formations and sweeping views of the Sobaek mountain range. It’s a moderate yet fulfilling hike with a mix of shaded trails, stone steps, and a rewarding summit that offers one of the best views in Korea.
Getting to Songnisan National Park
By Public Transport:
The easiest way to reach Songnisan National Park is by bus. If you’re coming from Seoul:
- Take an express bus from Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Boeun Bus Terminal (about 2.5–3 hours).
- From Boeun Bus Terminal, take a local bus or taxi to the Songnisan National Park entrance (20–30 minutes).
If you’re traveling from Daejeon, you can take a bus directly to Boeun or a train to Cheongju, then transfer to a bus.
By Car:
For those driving from Seoul to Songnisan, set your navigation to Songnisan National Park Parking Lot in Naver. There is ample parking near the entrance, but weekends can get crowded, so arriving early is best.
From Camp Humphreys to Songnisan National Park:
Distance: Approximately 165.3 km
Estimated Travel Time: Around 3 hours and 20 minutes
- By Car:
- Route: Head east from Camp Humphreys towards the Gyeongbu Expressway (Expressway 1). Continue southbound, then take the exit towards Boeun. Follow the signs leading to Songnisan National Park.
- Note: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, and consider using Naver as your navigation system for real-time traffic updates.
From Daegu to Songnisan National Park:
Distance: Approximately 144.6 km
Estimated Travel Time: Around 2 hours and 30 minutes
- By Car:
- Route: Depart from Daegu, heading north on the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway (Expressway 45). Take the exit towards Boeun, then follow the signs to Songnisan National Park.
- Note: Be prepared for tolls along the expressway, and consider checking the traffic conditions before departure.
Best Time to Hike the trails in Songnisan National Park
Spring (April-May):
Perfect for seeing cherry blossoms and fresh greenery. Temperatures are mild, making it one of the best seasons to visit. This is when we went to Songnisan and Spring happens to be my favorite time to hike in South Korea.
Summer (June-August):
It’s warm and humid, with occasional rain. The dense forests provide shade, but the humidity can make the hike feel tougher. PLEASE CHECK ALL WEATHER APPS, BE CAREFUL HIKING IN THE HOT WEATHER IN SOUTH KOREA.
Autumn (September-November):
This is the most popular time due to the vibrant fall foliage. The mountain turns shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a magical hiking experience.
Winter (December-February):
Hiking in winter is possible, but trails may be icy, especially near the summit. Dress warmly and check the weather conditions beforehand.
Hiking Route to Munjangdae Peak
Starting Your Hike at Beopjusa Temple and Explore Beopjusa Forest Trail
The most scenic and popular route to Munjangdae begins at Beopjusa Temple, a historic Buddhist temple over 1,500 years old. Before starting your hike, take a moment to explore this beautiful site, which features the Golden Buddha Statue (33 meters tall), serene pagodas, and intricate temple carvings.
The Beopjusa Temple Trail is a short but picturesque hike that takes you through serene forest landscapes to Beopjusa Temple, a major Buddhist temple and a place of cultural significance in South Korea.
This trail is ideal for those who want to experience the spiritual heart of Songnisan without the strenuous climb to the summit.
The path meanders through a lush forest of tall pine trees, offering shade and peace as you walk.
There are small streams and the occasional stone bridge along the way, making it a pleasant and meditative walk. The trail is well-marked and accessible to families or those who may not be looking for a physically demanding experience.
Upon reaching Beopjusa Temple, visitors can explore its ancient structures, including the Five-Story Pagoda and the impressive Bronze Buddha Statue. Beopjusa is one of the oldest temples in Korea and is still an active site for Buddhist ceremonies.
It’s a peaceful and reflective place, where you can rest and appreciate the serenity of both the architecture and the surrounding nature. Did you know that you can do a Korean Templestay? That’s right! This is one location where you can experience the powers of meditation!
Once you’re ready, follow the clearly marked signs towards Munjangdae Peak. The trail starts with a gentle incline, winding through forests of pine and oak trees. The fresh scent of the woods and the sound of birds make the first stretch of the hike incredibly peaceful.
The Ascent: Steeper Paths and Stunning Scenery to Mungjangdae
As you gain elevation, the path becomes steeper, transitioning from dirt paths to stone steps. There are occasional resting spots where you can catch your breath and take in the surrounding beauty.
One of the highlights along the way is the Samdobawi Rock (삼도바위), a massive rock where three provincial borders meet. This is a great place to snap some photos before tackling the final stretch to the peak.
Reaching the Summit: Munjangdae Terrace
The last part of the hike includes rocky outcrops with some areas requiring the use of handrails. But as soon as you reach Munjangdae Terrace, any fatigue vanishes! The summit opens up to breathtaking 360-degree views of the Sobaek mountain range, with rolling peaks stretching endlessly into the horizon. If you’re lucky, you might even catch the mist rolling over the mountains, creating an ethereal, dreamlike atmosphere.
Take your time at the top—this is the perfect spot to relax, enjoy a snack, and absorb the beauty around you. Many hikers like to bring kimbap or a small meal to enjoy before heading back down.
Descending and Alternative Routes
Most hikers return the same way via Beopjusa Temple, but if you want a different perspective, consider taking a loop route via Cheonwangbong Peak (천왕봉) or Seongbulsa Temple (성불사) for additional views. These paths are slightly longer but worth it if you have the energy.

Essential Hiking Tips
✅ Start Early: This trail is popular, especially in autumn. Arriving early means fewer crowds and cooler temperatures.

What to Do After Your Hike
Visit Beopjusa Temple Again
Now that you’ve completed the hike, take more time to explore Beopjusa Temple at a relaxed pace. If you didn’t check out the temple in the morning, it’s well worth a visit.
Try Local Food in Boeun
After burning all those calories, you deserve a delicious meal! In the nearby town of Boeun, try:
Deodeok Bibimbap (더덕 비빔밥): A bibimbap variation made with grilled deodeok root, a local specialty. Sobaeksan Sanchae Jeongsik (소백산 산채정식): A traditional Korean mountain vegetable set meal. Makgeolli (막걸리): A refreshing Korean rice wine that pairs perfectly with a post-hike meal.
