Rango Christmas Market in Garda-Trentino, Italy
Nestled in the heart of Trentino’s mountainous Bleggio region, Rango is a gem among Italy’s “Borghi piĂ¹ belli” (most beautiful villages). With its cobbled streets, historic courtyards, and centuries-old stone houses, Rango feels like stepping back in time. During the festive season, the village transforms into a Christmas wonderland, hosting the famous Mercantino di Rango or Rango Christmas market
This is a market that draws visitors from near and far. My guide will help you make the most of your visit, explore nearby Christmas markets, and immerse yourself in the charm of northern Lake Garda.
My husband and I snuck away to check out Rango one Saturday afternoon. We drove from Vicenza for over 2.5 hours. It was such a beautiful drive as you go around Lake Garda, and through Riva del Garda.
We knew then that we should have gotten a hotel close by as this area is Incredibly beautiful as it’s on the southern end of the Trentino-Alto Adige region.
Discovering Rango
Rango lies 800 meters above sea level, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Giudicarie Valleys. Once a crucial stopping point for merchants traveling between northern Europe and Italy, its preserved medieval architecture tells a story of enduring tradition.
The village’s narrow alleys, archways, and vaulted cellars evoke a sense of nostalgia, creating a perfect backdrop for its Christmas market.
Rango’s unique setting comes alive with festive lights and aromas. Unlike more modern markets in bustling cities, Rango’s event feels deeply connected to the past.
Vendors display their wares in ancient stone houses and cellars, each decorated with rustic charm. Strolling through these historic spaces, you’ll discover handcrafted goods and taste local specialties that reflect the area itself!
Grab a Map and Plan Out Your Visit to Rango Christmas Market
When you first walk into the market you’ll be able to grab a map from the information booth. This map is helpful because it will guide you to different vendors.
The map itself is sorted out by different animals of the region. So you’ll see districts on the map featuring the squirrel, the rabbit, the bear, and so on.
Vendors are assigned numbered rooms and you can choose to meander or you can follow the map to a T.
We chose to wander around the Christmas Market and take in the specialness of the market.
A Feast for the Senses
What to Shop For
Rango’s market is a treasure trove of handmade goods, ideal for finding unique gifts or souvenirs:
- Wooden toys and decorations: Perfect for children or as timeless ornaments.
- Ceramics: Delicate and colorful, these pieces are often crafted by local artisans.
- Knitted wool goods: Scarves, hats, and gloves made from locally sourced materials.
- Candles and soaps: Infused with alpine herbs and flowers, these make delightful gifts.
- Honey, Sauces, and Cheese: We picked up a jar of locally made honey, and some cheese from the Bee section. We chose Montagna Vecchio cheese from Riccadonna Serena. Our honey was from a Slow Food-certified Agrotourism business called Dalla Natura la Salute.
- Jewelry: Local artisans were showcasing some of the most beautiful pieces. I particularly liked Adagiolab (26) and Miriam Lucchi (59) were my favorites
The crafts here reflect a commitment to traditional techniques, ensuring authenticity in every item. I am vastly aware that the vendors may change every year but I am giving you an idea of what the layout is like. Psst, don’t forget your reusable bag!
Parking for Rango Christmas Market
This year (2024) they ask that you park in lots around the city. I saw this post on Instagram that provided information on where to park.
We paid 5 euros for the shuttle bus to pick us up from a parking lot in Fiave. There is a ticket booth right across from the parking lot. You’ll have access to Mercatini di Natale di Rango via the bus and a return ride back to the parking lot.
