Level8 Gibraltar Carry-On Review (20” Aluminum): Is It Worth the Investment?

A woman wearing a blue coat stands outside a modern building, pulling a silver 20-inch Level8 Gibraltar carry-on suitcase. She faces a dark entry door with an intercom panel, suggesting she's about to check in or enter.

I tested the Gibraltar Aluminum 20″ in Silver by LEVEL8 to see if a more premium, hard-shell suitcase is actually worth the investment—or if it’s just about looks.

As someone who used to travel with a backpack, switching to structured luggage was already a big shift. So when I got my hands on an aluminum carry-on like this, I wanted to know: does it actually make travel easier, or just heavier?

I took this suitcase on a real trip to Austria, packed it fully, and put it through everything from car travel to hotel stays. It’s now been with me to Portugal, Morocco (where I filled it with all my surprise purchases from the Souk)

Here’s how the Gibraltar carry-on actually performs—and who it’s really worth it for.

Disclosure: Level8 gifted me two pieces of luggage featured in this post for testing and review. All opinions shared are entirely my own and based on real travel use.

About Level8: Premium Design for Modern Travelers

Founded in 2008 in the United States, LEVEL8 emerged as a top choice for a new generation of travelers. The brand first made waves with its patent-protected compartment featuring 230 shock-absorbing points, originally designed for Apple MacBooks, and has since evolved into a globally trusted name in luggage.

The brand has earned multiple international awards, including the Red Dot, iF, and IDEA design awards, and was named a Newsweek Readers’ Choice Winner for its Voyaguer collection.

Through all of my research, LEVEL8 stood out because of its commitment to both form and function. Its products are clean, minimalist, and crafted with premium materials, including aerospace-grade aluminum and Makrolon® polycarbonate.

With thoughtful features like ultra-smooth 360° spinner wheels (which I LOVE), TSA-approved locks, smart interiors, and even a wide-handle design (on select models), the luggage is built to make travel easier, sleeker, and less stressful.

LEVEL8 offers free shipping to the U.S., Canada, and Europe, fast delivery (typically 3–7 business days), and excellent customer support — plus, every suitcase comes with a lifetime warranty. They’re not just making luggage. They’re helping people move through the world with clarity and confidence.

LEVEL8 has quickly carved out a space as a premium, design-forward luggage brand. Their pieces are clean, modern, and functional — everything from the materials to the wheel design reflects careful, intentional craftsmanship. LEVEL8 is known for offering high-quality travel gear at a competitive price point, comparable to other luxury luggage brands, without compromising on features.

At-a-Glance: LEVEL8 Carry-On Comparison

I created a comparison chart for the two pieces of luggage that I was sent, so that you could easily see which one might be best for you. We all travel differently, and these two carry-ons are very different.

First Impressions: The Little Things That Felt Big (During Unboxing)

From the moment I got the confirmation that I’d be receiving not one but two carry-ons, I was buzzing. The shipping was incredibly fast — just three days — which was perfect timing, since we were about to leave for a road trip to Austria. They arrived literally 2 hours before we departed for our roadtrip. So I quickly unboxed them.

Both carry-ons arrived wrapped in white dust bags. I’ve never had luggage arrive like that before, and it immediately gave me a sense of quality and care. The hardware felt solid, the handles retracted like butter, and the wheels? PERFECTION.

I took each bag on a different trip. The Luminous Textured Carry-On 20″ came with me to Slovenia — a journey that included trains, buses, and plenty of walking (because let’s be real, I wanted to see if it could actually hold up). it’s perfect for a lightweight carry-on for Europe, in my opinion! I chose this one because of the weight difference between the two — the Gibraltar, at 10 lbs, felt a bit heavy for sprinting between platforms. After all, it’s a sturdy hard shell luggage for air travel.

So instead, I brought the Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-On 20″ on a scenic road trip to the Bodensee in Austria, where it could shine without the hustle of public transportation.

Below, I’ve broken down uboxing and features and how they performed in real travel situations.

Standout Feature: Sleek aluminum shell + award-winning design

When I unboxed the Gibraltar, I was in awe. HOW GORGEOUS and compact this piece of luggage is. Talk about luxury. This bag is sleek, solid, and I knew it would turn heads. But more importantly? It performs!

As I unboxed the Gibraltar, I noted how heavy it was as I lifted it out of the box; it was wrapped in a white dust bag. This attention to detail made me ecstatic.

The Gibraltar Carry-On 20”

The handle on the top felt sturdy, thick, and obviously made of rubber, which will be kinder to your hands in the long run. I love that the Gibraltar and the Luminous have handles on the top and the side. That’s a detail I think is missing from many pieces of luggage. I carried it around the house with me and noticed that, for as heavy as it’s listed, it was easy to carry around.

TSA Locks on the Gibraltar 20”

Gibraltar has two TSA locks on the side vs one on the top, which I thought was a beautiful addition, making it feel old school but updated. I’ll be a little honest, I felt like Carmen San Diego with this case. Why? Because it had that sleek, retro-glam edge — like I was dashing through an international terminal with style, mystery, and zero stress. The dual side locks gave it a nostalgic trunk-like vibe, while the smooth aluminum finish and seamless latches made it feel undeniably modern. It’s that blend of old-school charm and updated design that made me feel like a total globetrotting pro.

As I played with the locks, I loved how they clicked open. There was something about the noise that I LOVED.

Inside the Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-On 20”

After opening the Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-On, I was surprised to see:

  • Dividers that click into place — no flopping around. I LOVE this detail! You can remove them as well. They button into the suitcase as pictured above.
  • Mesh zip pockets were perfect for storing my travel journal + small souvenirs!
  • A Luggage tag that comes included, which I loved!

My husband and I had a little photoshoot fun in the hallway of our Hotel in Austri,a showing off the details of Gibraltar:

How the Gibraltar 20” Carry-On Performed:

I decided to take this one on a winter vacation to Austria for Christmas. We would be driving to our destination, and I decided, since Gibraltar was heavier, that this was a prime opportunity to use it. The best part about this was that it fit perfectly into our trunk, slid into place due to the dual-action wheels. I could easily pick this up without hesitation and put it away in a jiffy.

I packed a lot of sweaters with me on this trip, as the weather would be unpredictable and a bit wet. There was no problem with overpacking as I used LEVEL8 packing cubes that were a game-changer. With labels for each cube, I could keep everything tidy and know exactly where to grab what! PERFECT for my ADHD brain.

When we arrived at the hotel, I was easily able to hang things up and put my items away

The packing cubes are really nifty, and I actually love how big they are. The electronics compartment can be modified to accommodate various items. I carry my Sony Alpha camera batteries, charger, and phone charger cords in this.

This is definitely something I’ll keep using no matter which carry-on I’ll choose!

Level8 Packing Cubes Review: Smart Storage for Travel

If you’ve ever wondered whether packing cubes are actually worth it for carry-on travel, I get the hesitation—I wasn’t completely sold until I tried the four-piece LEVEL8 packing cube set. Though not included with the luggage, these cubes are specifically designed to work across the entire Level8 suitcase collection, including theLuminous Textured 20’’ and the Gibraltar Aluminum 20’’. Each cube is crafted from lightweight, water-repellent, duo-toned polyester and includes a garment cube, a journey cube (perfect for shoes or worn clothes), an electronics pouch, and a grooming essentials bag. If you’re looking for packing cubes that fit in carry-on luggage without wasting space or bulking things up, these are a great option.

What really makes these stand out from generic packing cubes is the smart design—especially the Velcro labeling system, which lets you quickly tag and identify the contents of each cube. This came in especially handy when I needed to grab toiletries mid-flight or quickly locate tech gear without unpacking everything.

At $49.99, they’re priced higher than no-name options, but if you’re researching the best packing cubes for carry-on travel, these offer a tailored, durable solution that complements the interior of most Level8 luggage. They’ve helped me pack more efficiently, stay organized, and keep everything tidy from takeoff to touchdown.

🎒 LEVEL8 Packing Cubes Pros and Cons

✅ Pros

  • Designed to fit perfectly in Level8 carry-ons
  • Water-resistant, duo-tone polyester fabric
  • Velcro labeling system is super helpful
  • Helps travelers stay organized and reduce stress
  • Includes pouches for garments, electronics, and toiletries

❌ Cons

  • Sold separately for $49.99
  • Pricier than basic packing cubes
  • May lack structure for those who prefer firm-sided organizers

Final Verdict: Luminous vs. Gibraltar

So, would I choose the Level8 Luminous over the Gibraltar?

Honestly—it depends on how you travel.

For me, the Luminous wins for plane travel, especially when you need to lift your suitcase into an overhead bin. It’s lightweight, easy to handle, and far less stressful when you’re navigating airports solo.

The Gibraltar, on the other hand, feels like a more premium, heavy-duty option. While it can be used as a carry-on, I personally prefer to check it in rather than lift it overhead, simply because of the weight.

Where the Gibraltar really shines is in its smooth wheels, structure, and protection. It glides beautifully and feels more secure—making it a great option for train travel or trips where you want that extra durability.

So here’s how I see it:

  • ✈️ Choose the Luminous if you want lightweight, easy overhead lifting, and stress-free air travel
  • 🚆 Choose the Gibraltar if you want durability, smoother rolling performance, and a more premium feel

For me? I’d reach for the Luminous when I’m flying—and the Gibraltar when I want something sturdier and more protective.

Is LEVEL8 Luggage Waterproof?

To a certain extent, I wouldn’t recommend drowning your luggage in a pool.

While taking the LEVEL8 Luminous Textured 20” through the snow and puddles of water, I was worried that it wouldn’t make it through, but that was clearly not a concern at all. My items in my bag were fine.

TSA Lock Setup

Both locks were super easy to set — instructions were included, and it took me maybe a minute. I always fear I’ll forget the combo, so I stuck a backup note in my phone. Simple, secure, and no fiddling.

Which One’s Right for You?

If you want ultra-lightweight and colorful minimalism, go with the Luminous Textured Carry-On. It’s perfect for short trips, train travel, and carry-on-only flyers who still want a bag that looks polished and professional.

If you travel often by air, want added security, and appreciate premium materials and extras like packing cubes, the Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-On is worth the splurge. It looks incredible, performs like a tank, and still lifts easily despite its build.

Personally? I’ll be rotating both depending on the destination.

LEVEL8 Price Point: Can travelers on a Budget Afford It?

Let’s be honest — LEVEL8 isn’t budget luggage. These are investment pieces built to last for years of travel. But after testing both bags, I genuinely believe the value matches the price.

The Luminous Textured Carry-On starts around €240 / $259, which is comparable to mid-range brands but with far better quality, smoother wheels, and a more premium feel. The Gibraltar Aluminum Carry-On is priced closer to €640 / $679, and yes — that’s an investment. But you’re paying for aerospace-grade materials, award-winning design, and bonus accessories like a 4-piece packing cube set and a luggage tag.

You can check out more of LEVEL8 Deals on their website.

For frequent travelers or anyone who’s had to replace broken luggage mid-trip (hi, it’s me), the long-term cost is worth it.

Final Thoughts: From Messy to Minimal

I’ll continue using my hiking pack for mountain adventures. But for city breaks, plane travel, and longer-distance trips, these Level8 carry-ons are my go-to from now on.

They’ve made travel feel less chaotic, more organized, and even a little stylish. And that’s a big win in my book.

FAQ: Your Level8 Questions Answered

Common questions people have before purchasing luggage are below:

Are the wheels on the Gibraltar and Luminous really that quiet?

Yes. I tested them on tile, carpet, and rocks — and they glided silently the whole time.

Are LEVEL8 carry-ons waterproof?

They’re water-resistant. I sprayed both with water, and nothing inside got wet. The Gibraltar sealed particularly well.

Are LEVEL8 carry-ons really worth the investment?

If you travel often or value a smooth, stress-free packing experience, 100% yes. Both the Luminous and Gibraltar pieces combine smart design with durability and style. They feel more high-end than many bags twice the price.

Will LEVEL8 carry on fit in overhead bins?

Yes. Both are airline-compliant carry-on sizes. I had no trouble on a standard European airline or train.

Will Gibraltar and Luminous Textured work for budget airlines like Ryanair or Wizz Air?

Yes — but always double-check your fare class. Both the Luminous and Gibraltar are within standard international carry-on dimensions and fit in overhead bins on most European carriers, including Ryanair and Wizz Air. However, those airlines often require you to purchase a priority or upgraded fare to bring a full-size carry-on onboard. If you’re flying with just a personal item, you’ll likely need a smaller underseat bag.

Where can I purchase LEVEL8 Luggage?

Through their website, LEVEL8, and also on Amazon.com

Hi, Kim. This Resource section is SO helpful. I’ve done a lot of research on luggage, but your information here is the best–not to mention the fact that your recommendations are tried and tested, and I certainly trust you and your experience. I’ve usually taken a plane carry-on tote for reading materials, meds, etc., and then wished I’d used a backpack instead, by the time I arrived at my destination and needed a daypack. So I’ll have to look into that part of it.

As you already know, I’m impressed with all the research and work that you have put into your business. As a travel writer, business owner, academic, and former tour operator–believe me, I KNOW what all this entails. I respect and admire you. All the reading I’ve done today on your site has generated some ideas for future trips for us.

Now I’m going to go join your Facebook group. See you back in Minnesota some time. Love, Wendy
