Visiting the French Riviera in February: Weather, Festivals, and Why This Quiet Season Shines

February is one of the most overlooked months to visit the French Riviera, and that is exactly why it works so well. While much of Europe is still deep in winter, the Côte d’Azur quietly comes alive with sunshine, citrus festivals, and a slower, more local pace of life.

I have visited the French Riviera twice in February for the Fete Du Citron, and both trips surprised me in the best way. Mild temperatures. Blue skies. Outdoor lunches. Long coastal walks without crowds.

This region averages over 300 days of sunshine a year, and February often delivers some of the clearest, crispest days of the season.

If you are weighing whether February is a good time to visit the Côte d’Azur, this guide will help you decide with confidence. From weather expectations to February’s most important festivals, here is what you actually need to know.

Why I think you should visit the French Riviera in February

February sits firmly in the Riviera’s shoulder season. It is not beach weather, but it is ideal for travelers who value culture, scenery, food, and breathing room.

This is the month when locals reclaim their towns, hotel prices drop, and festivals add color and energy without overwhelming crowds. Restaurants are easier to book, trains are calmer, and iconic places like Menton, Nice, and coastal villages feel lived-in rather than hectic.

For travel-savvy visitors, February offers a rare balance: atmosphere without chaos.

In my honest opinion, I have so much fun in February on the French Riviera. Getting to know the French Riviera at a slower pace has been truly lovely. While it is busy with festival goers, I have never had any problems getting around, and I don’t feel overwhelmed.

The best part is, as of right now, I feel like the Fete Du Citron in Menton is lesser known. So you have that advantage.

If you go further inland to other small villages of the French Riviera that are at a higher elevation, you’ll find it’s a bit colder and again, fewer crowds than in the summertime!

Weather on the French Riviera in February: What to Expect

Average Temperatures

  • Daytime highs: 10–15°C (50–60°F)
  • Nighttime lows: 5–8°C (40–46°F)

On sunny days, it often feels warmer than the forecast suggests, especially when walking along the coast or sitting outdoors in sheltered spots.

Average Rainfall on the French Riviera in February

February is not a particularly wet month on the French Riviera, especially compared to northern Europe or even parts of Italy.

Typical February rainfall (Nice and Menton):

  • Average rainfall: ~55–65 mm (2–2.5 inches)
  • Rainy days: ~5–7 days across the month
  • Rain usually falls in short bursts, not all-day systems

What this means for you is that February often brings bright, clear stretches of weather, with occasional rain that passes quickly. It is common to have several consecutive sunny days, especially along the coast, making February a strong month for walking, sightseeing, and festival travel.

If you are coming from colder or wetter winter climates, the Riviera in February often feels refreshingly light and outdoors-friendly.

In my experience, 2025 was much wetter for us when we were there for a week in February. We were caught off guard by this, so make sure you pack accordingly

What to Pack for February on the French Riviera

You do not need heavy winter gear, but flexibility is key. Think spring layers rather than deep winter clothing.

February Festivals That Make the Trip Worthwhile

One of the strongest reasons to visit the French Riviera in February is its festival calendar. These are not small, local-only events. They are internationally recognized celebrations with deep roots in regional culture.

Nice Carnival: The Riviera’s Biggest Winter Event

The Nice Carnival is one of the largest and most famous carnivals in the world, dating back to the 13th century. Held over several weeks in February, it transforms the city with parades, giant satirical floats, flower battles, and evening light displays.

Nice Carnival tips for first-time visitors

  • Book accommodations early if staying in Nice during carnival dates
  • Consider daytime parades for families and evening parades for spectacle
  • Base yourself nearby, such as in Menton, and take the train into Nice

Even if you are not a carnival person, experiencing Nice during this time adds an energy that contrasts beautifully with the otherwise calm winter rhythm.

Fête du Citron in Menton: Citrus, Color, and Coastal Charm

The Fête du Citron in Menton is one of the Riviera’s most distinctive events. You can learn more about the Fete Du Citron here For several weeks in February, massive citrus sculptures made from lemons and oranges fill the Biovès Gardens, while parades roll through town celebrating Menton’s citrus-growing heritage.

This festival feels artistic rather than chaotic. Menton remains relaxed even at its busiest, and February is when the town truly shines.

Mimosa Festival in Mandelieu-la-Napoule: A Golden Hillside Celebration

Further west along the Riviera, the Mimosa Festival celebrates the bright yellow blooms that blanket the hills around Mandelieu-la-Napoule each February. Parades, flower-covered floats, and walking routes through mimosa forests mark the season.

This festival is especially appealing for travelers who enjoy nature, light hiking, and smaller-town events. It pairs well with a February itinerary focused on exploration rather than ticking off landmarks.

Fewer Crowds and Better Prices for Hotels in February

February is one of the best months for value on the French Riviera.

If you want to experience the Riviera without fighting crowds or overpaying for accommodation, February is one of the smartest choices you can make.

Is February a Good Time to Visit the Côte d’Azur?

For the right traveler, absolutely.

February is ideal if you:

  • Prefer culture and scenery over beach time
  • Enjoy festivals without peak-season crowds
  • Want better accommodation prices
  • Appreciate walking, food, and regional events

It may not suit travelers seeking swimming or nightlife-heavy itineraries, but for thoughtful, experience-driven travel, February is one of the Riviera’s most rewarding months.

Who February Might Not Be Right For

February on the French Riviera is not designed for travelers chasing classic beach weather. While the coastline is beautiful year-round, sea temperatures are cold, and most beach clubs operate seasonally. If your ideal Riviera trip centers on swimming, sunbathing, or spending long days on the sand, the experience in February will feel limited compared to late spring or summer.

This month may also disappoint travelers building itineraries around nightlife or pool-focused resort stays. Evening energy is calmer, many hotel pools are unheated or closed for the season, and entertainment leans local rather than late-night. February is best suited to travelers who value culture, festivals, walking, food, and atmosphere over beach days or nightlife-driven plans.
