Your Ultimate Guide to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market
Consider me influenced! My friend Terry from Traveling Terry showcased this amazing Christmas Market on her Instagram and raved so much that I immediately knew I had to visit the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market. This is one of the Black Forests Christmas markets you cannot miss!
To make the most of this festive adventure, I invited a dear friend of mine, Kristy, who is currently stationed in Rota, Spain. She had had zero hesitations about meeting me and immediately booked a flight.
We met up in Basel and we took the train to Titisee to experience not one, but two incredible Christmas Markets nestled in the enchanting Black Forest of Germany. What made this trip special was the opportunity to embark on a pre-market torchlit hike, which added a magical touch to our journey.
Although it was a quick trip, we immersed ourselves in the charm of both markets. I sincerely hope you’ll be inspired to follow in our footsteps after reading this!
In addition to Ravenna Gorge, don’t forget to include Christmas Market in Freiburg on your itinerary—it’s truly a can’t-miss event!

What is The Ravenna Gorge
The Ravennaschlucht Gorge (Ravenna Gorge) is a stunning natural wonder in the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) region of southern Germany, in Hinterzarten.
It is renowned for its dramatic scenery, where steep, forested cliffs flank the Ravenna stream as it cascades down a series of breathtaking waterfalls, creating a truly picturesque setting.
Although the gorge is relatively small, it is famous for its rugged beauty and the tranquil atmosphere of its surrounding woods.
The Ravenna Bridge adds to the allure, a 40-meter-high railway viaduct that spans the gorge. This iconic structure is not only a striking sight but also a remarkable feat of 19th-century engineering.
Furthermore, the viaduct is an integral part of the Höllentalbahn (Hell Valley Railway), which connects the cities of Freiburg and Titisee-Neustadt.
The area around the gorge holds historic significance. Remnants of old mills and other structures can still be found, providing a glimpse into its past role in industry and trade.
The History of the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market
The Ravennaschlucht Christmas Market (Ravenna Gorge in English) has been enchanting visitors since its debut in 2011. Nestled in the heart of the Black Forest, this market was specifically conceived to highlight the region’s stunning natural beauty and vibrant cultural traditions. The vision behind the market emerged from a collaboration between local tourism boards and community members, who aimed to create a Christmas experience as magical as its surroundings.
The location itself—situated beneath the towering 40-meter-high railway viaduct in the Ravenna Gorge—is truly unforgettable. Each year, the market showcases artisanal crafts, traditional Black Forest specialties, and festive music, all beautifully illuminated by twinkling lights that evoke a fairytale-like atmosphere. It’s not just a market; rather, it’s an immersive experience that draws visitors into the spirit of the season. In doing so, it blends the rugged charm of nature with the warmth of holiday traditions, creating a memorable event for all.

Tips for Visiting the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market
Market stalls in the Ravenna Gorge
The Ravennaschlucht Christmas Market offers a mouthwatering selection of traditional German holiday treats, with something to please every palate. The wooden stalls that are set up are covered in beautiful Christmas lights and create a beautiful atmospheric vibe.
One of the must-try drinks at the market is Rudi’s GlĂ¼hwein, a warm, spiced mulled wine that’s perfect for sipping as you wander through the stalls. For something a bit more festive, visitors can enjoy FĂ¼nfzangenbowle, a theatrical and sweet concoction of wine, rum, and sugar, flambĂ©ed at the stall for a truly magical experience.
The sight of it being prepared is as captivating as the drink itself. It was hilarious to even try to ask the crew at Rudi’s for this as they had to spot check my pronunciation. You have to let the fire burn on the sugar cube as you might burn an eyebrow off or set your hair on fire!
When it comes to savory foods, the market is a feast for the senses. The sizzling Currywurst is a crowd favorite, with bratwurst sausages drenched in a rich, spiced ketchup and curry powder. For something earthy and flavorful, you can’t go wrong with Bratpilze (fried mushrooms), crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, or Kartoffel Puffen, crispy potato fritters that are a perfect winter comfort food. Kartoffel Wedges (potato wedges) is another popular snack, seasoned to perfection and served hot from the fryer. I had the Potatoe wedges with the mushrooms. They were good but I ended up regretting it later as I really don’t eat this type of food at home. So pace yourself!
Other Items
For a hearty meal, try the Langos, a deep-fried Hungarian flatbread served with a variety of toppings like sour cream and cheese, or indulge in a steaming plate of Hot Macaroni (also known as HeiĂŸer Makkaroni), a warming dish of cheesy pasta that is a perfect winter pick-me-up. Lastly, don’t forget the Schwarzwälder Bratwurst—Black Forest bratwurst—juicy and flavorful, it’s a quintessential taste of the region. With so many tempting treats, it’s impossible to leave the market without feeling satisfied and full of holiday cheer.
P.S. Don’t forget to practice sustainability and bring your reusable tote to carry things around!
