In 2024, I did the Ravenna Gorge torchlight (Weihnachtsmarkt in der Ravennaschlucht) hike after seeing it all over social media—and I’ll admit, the visuals totally sold me. But once I experienced it for myself, I realized people have very mixed opinions about whether it’s worth it.

It’s festive. It’s moody. And it’s become one of the most talked-about ways to arrive at a European Christmas market.
But is it worth your time, money, and the frostbite risk?.

So let’s talk about what it’s really like.

What Is the Ravenna Gorge Torchlight Hike (Fackelwanderung)?

The torchlight hike is a 45-minute guided walk through the snowy forest from the town of Hinterzarten to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt in der Ravennaschlucht). You’ll carry real wax torches that flicker in the dark as you follow a forest trail that winds through the Löffeltal valley.

The hike is led by two guides (one English-speaking and one German-speaking), and it’s organized by the local Schneeschule in partnership with Hoch Schwarzwald Tourism.

What to Expect on the Trail

You’ll check in with your phone ticket at the Kurhaus in Hinterzarten

After a short stroll to the starting point, you’re handed your wax torch—and yes, sheet music. Because you’ll sing a traditional German Christmas carol before heading into the woods. I know it sounds kitschy, but trust me, it works. These little touches are what make this hike feel intentional and charming—not just another Instagram moment.

As you walk, you’ll pass old mill homes, snow-covered trees, and soft streams flowing through the forest. There’s something surreal about hearing only footsteps and flickering fire as you approach the market lights in the distance.

And then—bam—just when you think it can’t get more magical, the glow of the viaduct breaks through the trees like a scene from a winter fairytale.

So, is the Ravenna Gorge Fackelwunderung worth it?

YES, yes it is. I think it is a unique way to experience a German Christmas market.

What to Wear

You’ll be walking outdoors in the snow for about an hour, so dress accordingly:

  • Waterproof boots with tread (it can be slick)
  • Warm, insulated coat
  • Thermal leggings or ski pants
  • Gloves +hat
  • Scarf or neck warmer

Tip: Avoid long coats or flammable fabrics. You’re carrying real fire! (My jacket bears scars from this hike)

Is the Hike to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market Safe for Solo Travelers or First-Time Visitors?

Yes! I did it with my friend Kristy, but this hike felt very beginner- and solo-traveler-friendly. The guides were attentive, the path was well marked, and the atmosphere was communal.

I even chatted with other travelers during the walk—it’s a fun and festive experience that feels shared, even if you come alone.

If you have mobility issues, problems with balance. I would bring some hiking poles. This may help you if the route has ice on it.

Can You Take Photos?

Absolutely. But nighttime forest photography is tricky, so use:

  • Night mode on your phone
  • A Torch behind your subject for a magical glow
  • A Phone tripod if you want stable shots

Don’t forget to capture that moment when the viaduct comes into view—it’s pure magic.

Should You do the Ravenna Gorge Torchlit Hike and is it really worth it?

Absolutely. The torchlight hike adds a magical, almost storybook quality to an already special experience. If you’re planning to visit the market, this is hands-down the most atmospheric and memorable way to arrive.

Let’s be real—if you can’t make it to a dozen Christmas markets across Germany this year, make it to this one. Everyone has their hot take on which market is “the best,” but honestly? Only you can decide what makes a market worth it for you.

And while I could go on a whole tangent about how influencers have turned Christmas Market season into a sparkly, Disney-fied aesthetic fest… I’ll say this: I still think it’s pretty great.

Last year, I could only swing two Christmas markets in Germany—then I spent more time at Polish markets (which deserve their spotlight). So when I finally made it to this one, it ticked the box. It felt worth it.

Final Thoughts

For solo travelers, first-time visitors, or anyone craving a more immersive Black Forest moment, this hike adds connection and a little storybook-level magic to your winter trip.

It’s more than just a way to get to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market—it is the experience.

For me, it was the perfect kickoff to the Christmas season. And when I asked my friend Kristy what she thought, she didn’t even hesitate:
“Without a doubt—it was so fun!”
