Ravenna Gorge Torchlight Hike: Is It Actually Worth It in 2026?
In 2024, I did the Ravenna Gorge torchlight hike (Weihnachtsmarkt in der Ravennaschlucht) after seeing it all over social media—and I’ll admit, the visuals completely sold me.
But once I experienced it for myself, I realized something important: people have very mixed opinions about whether it’s actually worth it.
Now heading into the 2026 Christmas season, this has become one of the most in-demand (and fastest-selling) Christmas market experiences in Germany.
It’s festive. It’s moody. And yes—it feels like walking straight into a winter fairytale.
But is it worth your time, money, and the very real risk of slipping on an icy forest trail?
Let’s talk about what it’s actually like—so you can decide if it belongs on your Christmas market itinerary this year.
Quick Verdict: Is the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Hike Worth It in 2026?
✨ My Verdict:
Worth it for:
✔ First-time visitors to German Christmas markets
✔ Photographers + anyone chasing that “fairytale” vibe
✔ Travelers who want a unique, immersive arrival experience
Skip if:
✖ You dislike crowds or guided group experiences
✖ You’re unsteady on icy or uneven terrain
✖ You prefer flexible, self-paced exploring
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5 — magical, but not for everyone)
What Is the Ravenna Gorge Torchlight Hike (Fackelwanderung)?
The torchlight hike is a 45-minute guided walk through the snowy forest from the town of Hinterzarten to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt in der Ravennaschlucht).
You’ll carry real wax torches that flicker in the dark as you follow a forest trail winding through the Löffeltal valley.
The hike is led by two guides (one English-speaking and one German-speaking) and is organized by the local Schneeschule in partnership with Hochschwarzwald Tourism.

How to Book the Torchlight Hike to the Ravenna Gorge
You can book the torchlight hike when purchasing your Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market ticket through the Hoch Schwarzwald official website. Tickets usually appear on their website in MID OCTOBER. It’s become a royal clusterfu**k to get them every year so be prepared to be on it!

especially the Saturday ones!
What to Expect on the Trail
You’ll check in with your phone ticket at the Kurhaus in Hinterzarten
After a short stroll to the starting point, you’re handed your wax torch—and yes, sheet music. Because you’ll sing a traditional German Christmas carol before heading into the woods. I know it sounds kitschy, but trust me, it works. These little touches are what make this hike feel intentional and charming—not just another Instagram moment.
As you walk, you’ll pass old mill homes, snow-covered trees, and soft streams flowing through the forest. There’s something surreal about hearing only footsteps and flickering fire as you approach the market lights in the distance.
And then—bam—just when you think it can’t get more magical, the glow of the viaduct breaks through the trees like a scene from a winter fairytale.
So, is the Ravenna Gorge Fackelwunderung worth it?
YES, yes it is. I think it is a unique way to experience a German Christmas market.
This is literally it. I don’t have any poetic remarks on what else to expect, just know it’s fun. It’s beautiful with the snow, and I loved it!
The Downsides (That People Don’t Talk About)
This is where opinions get mixed—and it’s worth knowing before you book:
- It’s a group experience → you can’t go at your own pace
- Trails can be icy → especially later in the evening
- Crowds are real → particularly on weekends
- Torch smoke → you will smell like a campfire after
None of these were dealbreakers for me—but they’re worth factoring in.

What to Wear to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market in Germany
You’ll be walking outdoors in the snow for about an hour, so dress accordingly
For Christmas Markets in Europe, here are a few Items I would recommend wearing
My favorite winter boots
My Favorite Winter Jacket
My Favorite Winter Beanie

I tend to err on the side of “I want to feel warm and comfy” vs Instagram aesthetic. I’ll be honest, I am getting to old for all that. What you see is what you get.
Is the Hike to the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market Safe for Solo Travelers or First-Time Visitors?
Yes! I did it with my friend Kristy, but this hike felt very beginner- and solo-traveler-friendly. The guides were attentive, the path was well marked, and the atmosphere was communal.
I even chatted with other travelers during the walk—it’s a fun and festive experience that feels shared, even if you come alone.
If you have mobility issues or problems with balance. I would bring some hiking poles. This may help you if the route has ice on it.
Can You Take Photos?
Absolutely. But nighttime forest photography is tricky, so use:
Don’t forget to capture that moment when the viaduct comes into view—it’s pure magic.
So… Is the Ravenna Gorge Torchlight Hike Worth It?
Yes—with a small asterisk.
The torchlight hike adds a storybook, almost cinematic quality to an already unique Christmas market. It’s not just about the destination—it’s about the experience of getting there.
But it’s not for everyone.
If you’re expecting a quiet, uncrowded forest walk, this isn’t that. If you’re okay with a guided, shared experience in exchange for atmosphere and novelty—you’ll probably love it.
For me, it felt like the perfect kickoff to the Christmas season.
And when I asked my friend Kristy what she thought, she didn’t hesitate:
“Without a doubt—it was so fun!”
