Memmo Baleeira Hotel Review: A Relaxing Stay in Sagres, Portugal
If you’re trying to decide where to stay in Sagres, Portugal, and want something modern, relaxing, and full of amenities without feeling over-the-top, let me tell you why we chose Memmo Baleeira—and why I’d stay again.
My husband and I booked Memmo Baleeira for a four-night stay in February. It was Valentine’s Day weekend, my 40th birthday was around the corner, and I wanted something that felt special without tipping into luxury that felt out of reach.
For the past few years, we’d been spending time in the French Riviera, but this time we wanted something different. We had visited Portugal before—Lisbon, Porto, and Sintra—and loved it. The Algarve won us over this time purely based on logistics and weather.
And that’s how we ended up on the edge of Europe in Sagres at Memmo Baleeira!

Why Stay in Sagres Instead of Lagos or Albufeira?
If you look at a map of the Algarve, Sagres is that dramatic peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic—and yes, that caught my attention.
But the real reason we chose Sagres was the Fisherman’s Trail.
I wanted to hike at least one segment before I host my group trip to Portugal, and one of the routes to Salema actually starts right behind Memmo Baleeira. That felt like a sign.
Sagres is quieter than Lagos, more rugged, and less focused on nightlife. It’s the kind of place you go for coastal hikes, surf beaches, and sunsets that feel a little wild.
You’re also close to Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe, which adds a layer of history and drama to the landscape.
We visited in February and quickly realized the Algarve is where Europe’s version of “snowbirds” head for winter. It reminded me a lot of Florida in the U.S.—just with better views.
That also means fewer crowds and a more relaxed pace, but also fewer places open, which made staying somewhere like Memmo Baleeira even more valuable.
Why We Chose Memmo Baleeira
When I was researching hotels in Sagres, I kept coming back to Memmo Baleeira.
The spa was a big part of that decision; an indoor pool, sauna, and steam room sounded perfect for a February trip. I also wanted somewhere that would feel fully open and operational in the off-season.
If I’m being honest, we don’t always stay in places like this. Sometimes it feels out of reach, or like we don’t need all the amenities.
But this trip felt different. Turning 40 felt like something worth celebrating properly.
But we decided to go for it!
Pre-Arrival Experience
A few days before our stay, the hotel reached out about their Valentine’s Day dinner.
Leenora, one of their guest ambassadors, called to let us know reservations would be necessary and followed up by email with the menu. It felt personal, not automated.
They also confirmed our arrival details, explained parking, and let us know we could contact them with any questions.
It was a small detail, but it set the tone for the stay.
CHECK AVAILABILITY AT MEMMO BALEEIRA SAGRES

The Room: Double Room with Front Sea View
Walking into the room, my first impression was that everything felt clean, calm, and intentional.
The design leans into neutral, earthy tones—minimal, but not cold. It felt like the room was designed to blend into the natural surroundings rather than compete with them.
There was a cozy armchair tucked into the corner with a large overhead light, and it immediately felt like a space you could settle into. Next to it was a basket filled with extra blankets, which made the room feel even more comfortable.
The Bed? Super comfy, and we both melted into it. It was long enough for my husband at 5’11” and they left us quite a few pillows that, although they were not firm, were okay.
Once we opened the curtains, the space completely changed. Natural light filled the room, and the ocean view became the focal point.
They also had blackout curtains, which made it easy to fully shut out the light when we wanted to sleep in.
When the balcony door was open, all we heard was the ocean and the occasional seagull. It was peaceful and quiet—though Sagres is known for its wind, and during our stay, it was strong enough that we kept the door closed most of the time.
The room included a refrigerator, tea, bottled water, and instant coffee, as well as a kettle. Nothing excessive, but everything you actually need.
One thoughtful touch I absolutely loved about this stay: they left us chocolates and a handwritten note (which was a theme throughout the weekend!)
The bathroom was a great size with a rain shower and standard amenities. Overall, the space felt modern, calming, and well-designed.
The Spa at Memmo Baleeira
Sagres is not a “sit still” destination. Between coastal walks, wind, and time spent outdoors, your body feels it.
I booked a spa treatment on our second day and got a same-day appointment.
I went with a 60-minute treatment (€90), and it was exactly what I needed. It wasn’t overly gentle or just for show—it actually felt therapeutic. The therapist focused on areas that needed attention, and I walked out feeling noticeably better.
You have your choice of a male or female masseuse.
We also used the indoor pool, sauna, and steam room, which ended up being one of the highlights of the stay. They have a steam room and dry sauna, and it was a nice way to relax and detox.
If you’re visiting in the off-season, this setup makes a huge difference. It gives you something to look forward to after a day outside.
The only problem I had was that the hotel is a maze of corridors, which made it hard to get to the Spa. You can get a little lost in the hotel and the separate elevators.

Is the Spa Worth It?
If you’re booking a weekend or short stay and debating whether this hotel is worth it, the spa is a big part of the answer.
Especially if you:
- Plan to hike or explore the coast
- Are you visiting in winter or the shoulder season
- Want a balance of activity and relaxation
It’s not over-the-top luxury, but it’s thoughtful, functional, and exactly what you need in a place like Sagres.
Fornaria Restaurant at Memmo Baleeira
Fornaria is the hotel’s main restaurant, and everything revolves around the wood-fired oven.
The menu leans Mediterranean, with a focus on fresh, regional ingredients: seafood, meats, pizzas, and seasonal dishes.
The space itself feels warm and relaxed, with earthy tones and subtle design details that match the rest of the hotel. They do their best to note whether items contain gluten, and the staff goes above and beyond to ask about dietary preferences.
This is approachable fine dining, well executed, and it fits the overall vibe of Sagres.
Drinks & Bar Experience
The bar turned out to be one of our favorite parts of the stay.
Their cocktails are well done, but what stood out most were the Pisco Sours—perfectly balanced and not overly sweet. We ordered them more than once.
The bartender was friendly and clearly knew what he was doing, and the wine selection was a great way to try different Portuguese wines without overthinking it.
Breakfast at Memmo Baleeira
I wasn’t expecting much from the hotel breakfast, but this one genuinely surprised me.
The variety was impressive—scrambled eggs, real bacon, perfectly seasoned vegetables, local yogurt with toppings, granola, and a wide selection of pastries and breads.
It’s the kind of setup where you can go light or fully commit depending on your day.
The coffee was also better than expected, with two machines available to make anything from espresso to cappuccino.
And it never felt crowded—though we were visiting in the off-season, so I’d expect a different pace in summer.
It was warm enough in February to sit out on the porch and have breakfast, just beware of the friendly birds.
On the morning of our early checkout, they had breakfast prepared for us; you’ll need to let them know in advance. They gave us lunchboxes with sandwiches, oranges, granola bars, juice boxes, and water. It was the PERFECT way to get back to Lisbon: energized and recharged.
Special Events & Valentine’s Dinner
We stayed during Valentine’s Day and Carnaval weekend, and the hotel had several events planned.
We booked the Valentine’s dinner, and it turned out to be a highlight.
The meal was thoughtful without being overly formal, starting with a rich mushroom soup, followed by perfectly cooked beef tenderloin, and finishing with a light mango-based dessert.
It felt like something that enhanced the experience rather than just a themed add-on. Shoutout to the restaurant manager and staff, they were legitimately one of the best teams!
Is Memmo Baleeira Worth It?
Yes—especially if you’re looking for a hotel that balances relaxation with an active, coastal lifestyle.
This is the kind of place where you spend your day outside, hiking, exploring, or watching the ocean, and then come back to recover.
I would absolutely stay here again, and I am trying to find a way to stay in Sagres again!
