Malbork Castle: Everything You Need to Know
This is one castle you’ll want to revisit time and time! Whenever family and friends would come visit us in Poland we would make the trek from Bydgoszcz to Malbork so that they could mark this bucket list castle off their list. It also just so happens that Malbork is the LARGEST castle in the world by land area and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A Glimpse into History
Malbork Castle, also known as the Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork, was constructed in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights. This fortress served as the headquarters of the Order and played a crucial role in their control over the region. The castle’s strategic location on the banks of the Nogat River made it a key military and administrative center.
Over the centuries, Malbork Castle witnessed numerous historical events, including the Thirteen Years’ War and its transition into a Polish royal residence. The Castle has gone through many restoration efforts that have preserved its grandeur. This has allowed visitors to step back in time and explore its storied past.
How to Get There
Malbork Castle is easily accessible from various parts of Poland.
If you’re traveling from Gdańsk, you can take a train from Gdańsk Główny to Malbork, which takes approximately 30-55 minutes depending on the train type. Head on over to this website to get your tickets, and don’t worry, it’s fairly easy to navigate the Polish train system!
The train station is a stone’s throw away from the castle and it’s incredibly easy to walk to. Cabs are just as easy to get while at the train station.
Alternatively, you can drive to Malbork via the A1 highway, which offers a scenic route through the Polish countryside. I highly recommend this as Poland has some of the most beautiful countryside!
Where to Stay
If you don’t want to stay in Gdansk, you can always get a hotel in Malbork!
When visiting Malbork Castle, you’ll find a range of accommodation options to suit your preferences. Here are a few recommendations:

- Hotel Centrum Malbork: Located just a short walk from the castle, this hotel offers comfortable rooms and modern amenities.

The castle complex is divided into three main sections: the High Castle, the Middle Castle, and the Outer Bailey. Each section boasts unique architectural features and historical significance:
- High Castle: The oldest part of the complex. This area features the Grand Master’s Palace and the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This happens to be my favorite area.
- Middle Castle: Home to the Great Refectory, the Grand Master’s residence, and various chapels and halls.
- Outer Bailey: The largest section, containing granaries, stables, and other essential facilities.
Visitors can explore the labyrinth of rooms, turrets, and stairways, each offering a glimpse into the castle’s medieval past. The castle also houses a vast collection of amber, armor, paintings, and furnishings.
