Level8 Luminous Carry-On Review (20” Olivine): Is It Worth It for Solo Travel?

A green Level8 Luminous 20-inch carry-on suitcase stands upright on a stone walkway outside a building with arched wooden doors and stone walls. A small decorated Christmas tree on a stand adds a festive touch to the background.

I tested the Luminous Textured 20″ in Olivine on real trips, train platforms, cobblestone streets, winter weather, and everything in between, because not all carry-ons are built for how people actually travel.

As someone who used to throw everything into a backpack and hope for the best, I’ve become a lot more intentional about my luggage. I wanted something lightweight, durable, and easy to maneuver, especially for European travel.

So, on my recent trip to Slovenia in the winter, I put this carry-on by LEVEL8 to the test.

From how it rolls to how it handles rough terrain (and even being tossed into a bus compartment), here’s exactly how the Luminous performs—and whether it’s actually worth it for solo travelers.

Disclosure: Level8 gifted two pieces of luggage featured in this post for testing and review. All opinions shared are entirely my own and based on real travel use.

About Level8: Premium Design for Modern Travelers

Founded in 2008 in the United States, LEVEL8 emerged as a top choice for a new generation of travelers. The brand first made waves with its patent-protected compartment featuring 230 shock-absorbing points, originally designed for Apple MacBooks, and has since evolved into a globally trusted name in luggage.

The brand has earned multiple international awards, including the Red Dot, iF, and IDEA design awards, and was named a Newsweek Readers’ Choice Winner for its Voyaguer collection.

Through all of my research, LEVEL8 stood out because of its commitment to both form and function. Its products are clean, minimalist, and crafted with premium materials, including aerospace-grade aluminum and Makrolon® polycarbonate.

With thoughtful features like ultra-smooth 360° spinner wheels (which I LOVE), TSA-approved locks, smart interiors, and even a wide-handle design (on select models), the luggage is built to make travel easier, sleeker, and less stressful.

LEVEL8 offers free shipping to the U.S., Canada, and Europe, fast delivery (typically 3–7 business days), and excellent customer support — plus, every suitcase comes with a lifetime warranty. They’re not just making luggage. They’re helping people move through the world with clarity and confidence.

LEVEL8 has quickly carved out a space as a premium, design-forward luggage brand. Their pieces are clean, modern, and functional — everything from the materials to the wheel design reflects careful, intentional craftsmanship. LEVEL8 is known for offering high-quality travel gear at a competitive price point, comparable to other luxury luggage brands, without compromising on features.

First Impressions of the Lumionous Textured Carry-On

As I pulled the Luminous Textured Carry-On 20″ in Olivine out of the box, I loved that it was encased in a white dust bag, just like the Gibraltar. I realized that if you’re searching for a durable hard shell carry-on that performs well on European train platforms and city sidewalks, the Luminous Textured Carry-On might surprise you, and this might be the one for you (and me).

I slid Olivine out of her dust bag, and right away, I had to see how she moved across my marble floors. PERFECTION. I wish I had a video of how excited I was. The wheels were smooth, silent, and effortless — every bit as impressive as the Gibraltars’.

Durable Polycarbonate Suitcase

The Luminous Textured Carry-On is made out of scratch is a resistant, durable polycarbonate suitcase. I normally reach for black luggage to hide scuffs (it’s one of my pet peeves), but the Olivine has a matte, modern finish that looks sophisticated and — I think — will hold up just fine.I received the Olivine version, and I absolutely loved it. Something is calming about green, especially when you’re navigating stressful airports or train stations. This carry-on also comes in several other colors, including pink, navy, white, and classic black, so there’s plenty of room for personal style without sacrificing functionality.

Luminous Textured Carry-On TSA Lock

The Luminous Textured Carry-On features a TSA lock at the top, rather than the side, which I find to be a notable detail. It makes unlocking and securing your bag significantly more intuitive, especially when it’s upright in a tight overhead bin or standing next to you in line. It’s easier to access quickly, and you’re not fumbling around the side of your luggage just to check your combo or make sure it’s locked. It’s one of those little things that actually makes a big difference when you’re in motion.

What’s the inside look like?

One interior feature I really appreciated in the Luminous Textured Carry-On was the zippered mesh divider. It’s the kind of detail that makes packing — and unpacking — feel effortless. I used it to separate my outfits from my toiletries and smaller items, and it kept everything visible yet contained. No loose chargers sliding around, no socks escaping into corners. It’s a simple addition, but it made a big difference in staying organized on the go.

It’s wise to mention the extra bit of fabric near the zipper area, I love that extra feauture as it helps keeps all the items in your suitcase dry.

So, how did the Luminous Textured Carry-On Perform?

Made of polycarbonate, this carry-on is ultra-light yet sturdy, and I decided that this would be the perfect bag to take with me on a city break to Ljubljana, Slovenia.

What I Packed:

  • 4 outfits
    • 2 chunky sweaters
    • Dress
    • 1 pair of jeans
    • Boots
    • Toiletries + makeup
    • Chargers + travel journal

Level8 also sent me their packing cubes—and they ended up being a surprisingly useful addition to my carry-on setup.

360° silent spinner wheels

One thing I normally can’t stand about luggage? Dragging it over uneven cobblestones and gravel paths — a daily reality when traveling through Europe. I was bracing for the worst: noise, jolts, and a full-on upper-body workout. But to my surprise, the wheels on the Luminous handled it all like a pro.

Remember how I mentioned they’re 360° silent spinner wheels? That’s not an exaggeration. While you’ll still hear the natural sound of luggage rolling across rough ground, the wheels themselves are whisper-quiet and incredibly smooth. The transition from four-wheel upright glide to tilting it on two wheels felt ergonomic and easy, which came in handy when navigating narrow sidewalks and curbs around the train station in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

3-step aluminum telescopic handle

The handle slid up smoothly every time — whether I was jumping on a train in Treviso or hopping off in Udine. Before I left, I tested both the handle and wheels on tile, carpet, even rocks in my driveway — and they rolled like new the whole way through.

Anti-scratch Surface

When the bus driver tossed my bag into the undercarriage, I flinched, assuming the worst. But when I got it back? Not a single crack. That German-made Makrolon® was helping out, even when I wheeled it through slushy snow outside the Ljubljana station and down slick sidewalks to my hotel, everything inside stayed dry. I had worried about moisture sneaking through the zippers, but when I unpacked — both at the hotel and again at home — everything was perfectly intact.

  • Spacious interior with helpful mesh divider

Final Verdict: Luminous vs. Gibraltar

So, would I choose the Level8 Luminous over the Gibraltar?

Honestly, it depends on how you travel.

For me, the Luminous wins for plane travel, especially when you need to lift your suitcase into an overhead bin. It’s lightweight, easy to handle, and far less stressful when you’re navigating airports solo.

The Gibraltar, on the other hand, feels like a more premium, heavy-duty option. While it can be used as a carry-on, I personally prefer to check it in rather than lift it overhead, simply because of the weight.

Where Gibraltar really shines is in its smooth wheels, structure, and protection. It glides beautifully and feels more secure—making it a great option for train travel or trips where you want that extra durability.

So here’s how I see it:

  • ✈️ Choose the Luminous if you want lightweight, easy overhead lifting, and stress-free air travel
  • 🚆 Choose the Gibraltar if you want durability, smoother rolling performance, and a more premium feel

For me? I’d reach for the Luminous when I’m flying—and the Gibraltar when I want something sturdier and more protective.

Is LEVEL8 Luggage Waterproof?

To a certain extent, I wouldn’t recommend drowning your luggage in a pool.

While taking the LEVEL8 Luminous Textured 20” through the snow and puddles of water, I was worried that it wouldn’t make it through, but that was clearly not a concern at all. My items in my bag were fine.

TSA Lock Setup on the Luminous

LEVEL8 makes it easy for you to set the locks— instructions were included, and it took me maybe a minute. I always fear I’ll forget the combo, so I stuck a backup note in my phone. Simple, secure, and no fiddling.

Is the Level8 Luminous Carry-On Worth It?

If you’re looking for a lightweight, easy-to-maneuver carry-on that actually performs well in real travel conditions, the Level8 Luminous surprised me in the best way.

It handled cobblestones, train platforms, snow, and being tossed around in transit without adding stress to the experience—which, honestly, is the whole point of good luggage.

Is it perfect? No. It doesn’t come with extras, and over time, you might notice a few scuffs. But for the price point, the performance, smooth wheels, and thoughtful design make it feel like a solid upgrade from typical mid-range luggage.

For solo travelers—especially in Europe—this is the kind of carry-on that makes moving through your trip feel easier, not harder.

And that alone makes it worth it.

FAQ: Your Level8 Questions Answered

Common questions people have before purchasing luggage are below:

Are the wheels on the Gibraltar and Luminous really that quiet?

Yes. I tested them on tile, carpet, and rocks — and they glided the whole time silently.

Are LEVEL8 carry-ons waterproof?

They’re water-resistant. I sprayed both with water, and nothing inside got wet. The Gibraltar sealed particularly well.

Are LEVEL8 carry-ons really worth the investment?

If you travel often or value a smooth, stress-free packing experience, 100% yes. Both the Luminous and Gibraltar pieces combine smart design with durability and style. They feel more high-end than many bags twice the price.

Will LEVEL8 carry on fit in overhead bins?

Yes. Both are airline-compliant carry-on sizes. I had no trouble on a standard European airline or train.

Will Gibraltar and Luminous Textured work for budget airlines like Ryanair or Wizz Air?

Yes — but always double-check your fare class. Both the Luminous and Gibraltar are within standard international carry-on dimensions and fit in overhead bins on most European carriers, including Ryanair and Wizz Air. However, those airlines often require you to purchase a priority or upgraded fare to bring a full-size carry-on onboard. If you’re flying with just a personal item, you’ll likely need a smaller underseat bag.

Where can I purchase LEVEL8 Luggage?

Through their website, LEVEL8, and also on Amazon.com
