You know how everyone says you have to go to a Christmas market in Germany? Well, Iโm here to let you in on a little secret: Polandโs Christmas markets are coming in hot โ and Gdaลsk is leading the way with mulled wine, glittering lights, and all the holiday charm your festive-loving heart can handle.
Since I lived in Poland and visited again in 2024, Iโve watched the Gdaลsk Christmas Market transform from cozy and local into one of Europeโs most magical winter experiences. And clearly Iโm not the only one who thinks so โin 2024 Gdansk was voted the Best European Christmas Market by European Best Destinations. Not bad for a northern port city on the Baltic, right?
From handmade Polish ornaments to a guy dramatically shaving Parmesan over steaming macaroni (yes, thatโs a thing), this market blends tradition, creativity, and just the right amount of chaos โ in the best way.
Whether you’re planning a solo getaway, a festive family trip, or a girls’ weekend filled with grzaniec and gingerbread, this guide will help you make the most of your visit without the guesswork.

So, Where is Gdaลsk โ and What Makes It So Special?
Gdaลsk is located in northern Poland on the Baltic Sea. Itโs one of Polandโs oldest and most architecturally striking cities โ full of Hanseatic history, colorful facades, and cobbled streets. The Old Town is compact and walkable, with plenty of cozy cafรฉs, museums, and riverside views to explore before or after visiting the Christmas Market.
While itโs often overshadowed by Krakรณw or Warsaw, Gdaลsk offers something a bit different โ a perfect blend of seaside charm, rich history, and festive flair. During the holiday season, the entire Old Town transforms into a winter wonderland of lights, music, and Polish street food that warms you to your core. Don’t worry if you see Jarmark Bozonowar
The Gdansk Christmas Market 2025 spreads across:
- Targ Wฤglowy (Coal Market) โ the heart of the market
- Bogusลawskiego Street
- Tkacka Street
- The area around the Great Armoury (Wielka Zbrojownia)
Youโll enter through different festive gates (bramy), and there are maps posted in the Old Town showing all the zones. When I visited, I loved how spread out it feltโbusy, but not suffocating.
Best time to go:
- Arrive around 4โ5 p.m. for that perfect transition from daylight to twinkling lights
- Avoid Saturday night if you really dislike crowds
Hereโs a map to help you get oriented, including where the Christmas Market is located, tips for parking, and a suggested route from Gdaลsk Lech Waลฤsa Airport to the city center.

Getting to Gdaลsk for the Christmas Market
Letโs be honest โ planning how to get to a European Christmas market can feel like assembling IKEA furniture without instructions. But Iโve got you. Whether you’re arriving by plane, train, tram, or even ferry (yes, seriously), getting to the Gdaลsk Christmas Market is easier than you think โ and honestly, half the fun.
By Plane
Flying into Gdaลsk Lech Waลฤsa Airport (GDN) is the quickest way to land right in the holiday spirit. From the airport, itโs just a 30-minute ride to the Old Town by taxi, bus, or rideshare. Pop in Targ Wฤglowy or Brama Wyลผynna as your destination and youโre on your way to mulled wine heaven.
By Train (especially if youโre coming from Gdynia or Sopot)
Trains in Poland are a breeze. Hop on the SKM line and get off at Gdaลsk ลrรณdmieลcie. From there, follow signs through the tunnel toward Forum Gdaลsk Shopping Center, then continue along Waลy Jagielloลskie Street. Cross at Brama Wyลผynna and just like that โ youโre at the market.
By Tram or Bus
Public transport in Gdaลsk is super reliable, and the Jakdojade app is a lifesaver (trust me, itโs what locals use). Plug in Targ Wฤglowy or Brama Wyลผynna as your stop. You can also track trams and buses in real time on the ZTM Gdaลsk transit map โ no standing in the cold, wondering if you missed your ride.
By Car
Driving is possible, but letโs keep it real โ parking in Old Town during December is a mess. If youโre road-tripping in, park in one of the designated lots just outside the center and enjoy the short walk in. Your sanity (and your holiday cheer) will thank you.
By Ferry from Sweden
Now this oneโs for my festive overachievers: you can sail to the Gdaลsk Christmas Market on a Polferries ferry from the Stockholm region. Itโs an 18-hour overnight cruise across the Baltic โ and yes, itโs as dreamy as it sounds.
Book a ride on the Nova Star or Wawel, grab a cabin, and enjoy onboard restaurants, kids’ corners, a disco (!), and endless views of the snowy sea. Best part? You can bring your car and pack all the gifts you want โ no luggage restrictions.

- Over 160 light sculptures across 14 locations
- Highlights include Oliwa Park, Coal Market, Green Bridge, and Heweliusz Square
Pro tip: these displays are designed for Instagram โ and youโll spot them scattered throughout the Old Town and beyond. Donโt forget your camera (or your Pinterest board).

Where to Stay for the Gdaลsk Christmas Market
Whether youโre a solo traveler or traveling with family, staying within walking distance of the market will make your experience easier and more magical. Here are two handpicked options I love because I HAVE stayed at both places!
- PURO Gdaลsk Stare Miasto โ Stylish, modern, and walkable to the market. Great breakfast and sleek design. Book this one if you love a boutique vibe with convenience.
- Hanza Hotel โ Overlooks the Motลawa River, offers warm hospitality, and is just steps from the Christmas magic. Cozy, comfortable, and full of charm.
Both hotels are great picks for experiencing the market at night and rolling straight into bed after your last pierogi.
Stepping Into the Gdansk Christmas Market
First thing I want you to know about the Gdansk Christmas Market: You have to buy the mug outright. There is NO Pfand system.
Walking through the Gdaลsk Christmas Market was a sensory delight โ and the perfect winter escape. The air was thick with the sweet scent of gingerbread and smoky grilled kielbasa, mingling with the spicy aroma of steaming grzaniec (mulled wine) served from charming wooden stalls. Strings of warm lights crisscrossed the square, reflecting off the colorful faรงades of Gdaลskโs historic buildings and creating a cozy glow even on the chilliest December night.
I wandered from stall to stall, admiring intricate ozdoby ลwiฤ teczne (holiday decorations) and handmade crafts โ everything from delicate glass ornaments to woolen mittens and carved wooden toys. Street performers played carols, and the sound of laughter and clinking mugs of piwo and grzaniec filled the air. I couldnโt resist trying a plate of savory pierogi followed by a grilled oscypek drizzled with cranberry sauce โ both iconic Polish flavors you simply have to experience at least once.
The best part? Even though the market has grown in popularity, it still feels local and approachable, with plenty of opportunities to practice saying Dzieล dobry to friendly vendors and Dziฤkujฤ after each purchase. The festive energy is contagious, making it a truly magical holiday experience thatโs uniquely Polish.

How to Get to the Gdansk Christmas Market
If youโre wondering how to get to the Gdansk Christmas Market 2025, the good news is that this northern Polish city is very easy to reach by plane, train, or car.
The market is located just off the Old Town, a short walk from Gdaลsk Gลรณwny, the main train station, where youโll also find convenient luggage storage.
By Plane
Fly into Gdaลsk Lech Waลฤsa Airport (GDN), which has direct connections from many European cities. From the airport, itโs about 30 minutes to the city center by:
- SKM or PKM train
- Taxi or rideshare
- Airport bus into town
By Train
Gdaลsk has excellent rail connections from Warsaw, Krakรณw, Poznaล, Wrocลaw, and even Berlin. Trains arrive at Gdaลsk Gลรณwny, and from there itโs:
- About 10โ15 minutes on foot to Targ Wฤglowy
- Or a quick tram/ride-share if youโre carrying heavy bags
By Car
Driving to Gdaลsk is straightforward via the A1 and S7 motorways. Parking in the Old Town is limited and often expensive, so I recommend:
- Using one of the paid parking lots just outside the center
- Walking the short distance into the Christmas Market area
Prices at the Gdansk Christmas Market: How Much Do You Need?
Prices are listed in zลoty (PLN). Compared to when I lived in Poland, Iโll be honest: I was a bit shocked at how much things cost last year. But given whatโs happening globally, the increase makes senseโand itโs still great value compared to many Western European markets.
Rough price expectations (subject to change):
- Grzaniec (mulled wine): ~15โ25 PLN
- Street food plates (langos, pierogi, cheesy pasta): ~20โ40 PLN
- Sweets and desserts: ~10โ20 PLN
How much did I personally spend?
I took out 250 PLN from an ATM and only spent 50 PLN on foodโenough to eat well, sip wine, and still have zลoty left for souvenirs.
Cash vs. card:
- Many stalls accept cards
- Some smaller vendors are cash-only
- You can always walk through once, price things out, and then hit the ATM
ATM tip:
Avoid dynamic currency conversion and independent ATM brands like Euronet, which often have high fees. I only trust bank ATMs like ING, Millennium, Credit Agricole, etc.
What to Eat at the Gdansk Christmas Market
The food here is no jokeโhearty, comforting, and perfect for cold Baltic nights.
A few things I loved (or strongly recommend):
- Pierogi โ Go for the holiday classic: cabbage & mushroom
- Langos โ Hungarian, yes, but wildly popular here (crispy, fried, and piled with toppings)
- Macaroni & cheese โ Complete with an over-the-top cheese-shaving performance
- Churros โ For when youโre in the mood for something sweet and familiar
- Grzaniec โ Polish mulled wine in multiple flavors: cherry, plum, cranberry, and more
And then thereโs the vodka.
Youโll see stalls selling Soplica and other flavored vodkas or nalewki (Polish liqueurs). Cherry is a crowd favorite, but youโll also spot hazelnut, plum, and forest-berry flavors. A small shot is the perfect warm-up between stalls.
Gdansk Christmas Market for Families: Kid-Friendly or Not?
Even though I donโt have kids, I paid close attention to how families were using the spaceโand Gdaลskโs market felt extremely family-friendly.
Youโll find:
- Carousels and small rides
- Simple rollercoaster-style attractions for younger kids
- Plenty of stalls selling sweets, toys, and plushies
Is the Gdansk Christmas Market stroller-friendly?
Yes. The Old Town does have uneven cobblestones, but the general market layout is stroller-friendly. Just take it slow and be patient in the busiest pockets.
What to Buy at the Gdansk Christmas Market
Gdaลsk isnโt just about foodโyouโll also find beautiful, high-quality goods, many from local artisans.
A few standouts:
- Polish glass ornaments โ Hand-painted, often with local motifs; theyโre not cheap, but they are stunning. Many stalls package them carefully for travel.
- Baltic amber โ This is amber country. Only buy from certified sellers. If you want to go deeper, head to Amber Row in the Old Town.
- Nativity figurines & wood carvings โ Poland has a deep carving tradition; if you love nativities, youโll have options.
- Folk-style linens, scarves, and Bolesลawiec pottery โ Just know you may pay a bit more than outside the Christmas season.
Why I Skipped the Gdansk Christmas Market Mug
Letโs talk about that market mug.
It was pretty, and I was temptedโbut at 49.90 PLN (about โฌ11), I passed and put my money into food instead.
Unlike many German markets, Gdaลsk doesnโt currently use a pfand-style deposit system for mugs; you buy it outright. Fingers crossed that changes in 2025.
If youโre a mug collector, go for it. If not, Iโd personally prioritize pierogi, wine, and ornaments.
My One-Evening Gdansk Christmas Market Itinerary (Yes, You Can Do It All After 3 PM)
If youโre flying in, spending one evening in Gdaลsk, and heading out again (which is exactly what I did), this is proof you can still soak up the market without rushing.
15:00 โ Land in Gdaลsk
GDN is compact and easy to navigate.
15:30 โ Train to Gdaลsk Gลรณwny
Take the PKM train to the city center (about 35 minutes and just a few euros). Bolt is also an easy backup if you prefer a car, or you can pre-book a service like Welcome Pickups for a smooth arrival.
16:10 โ Store Luggage
Lockers at Gdaลsk Gลรณwny made this part effortless.
16:30 โ Appetizers at Chleb i Wino
I met my friend Aleksandra for warm bread, dips, and a cozy pre-market catch-up. Rustic, atmospheric, and a perfect way to fuel up.
17:15 โ Walk to the Market
We followed the lights and music toward Targ Wฤglowy. By this time, the sky was darkening, and the atmosphere was just right.
17:30 โ Dinner from the Stalls
- Pierogi with cabbage & mushroom
- Langos loaded with sour cream
- Macaroni topped with freshly shaved Parmesan
- A cherry nalewka to warm up
18:15 โ Souvenir Browsing
- 4+ stalls selling Polish-made glass ornaments (many ship internationally)
- Baltic amber jewelry
- Hand-carved nativity pieces
- Polish pottery and embroidered linens
18:45 โ Coffee & Wine Break
More grzaniec, of course.
19:30 โ Back to the Station
We picked up my bag and caught the train to Bydgoszczโfull, happy, and not at all rushed.
If you time it right, one evening is enough to enjoy the Gdaลsk Christmas Market without feeling like youโre sprinting from stall to stall.
Things to Do in Gdansk Besides the Christmas Market
If youโre planning a weekend or longer stay, itโs absolutely worth exploring beyond the market.
A few ideas:
- European Solidarity Centre (Solidarity Museum) โ My favorite museum in Poland and an essential stop to understand how the Solidarity movement helped change the course of Polish and European history.
- Day Trip to Malbork Castle โ One of Polandโs most iconic castles and the largest castle complex in the world by land area. Easy to reach by train and perfect for a winter day trip.
